Background

Charles Buchanan joined the Fisher College of Business as a Senior Lecturer in 2016. He earned his Master of Business Administrative degree through the FCOB Executive MBA program. He also has a B.S. degree in Psychology from Heidelberg University. Prior to working at FCOB he served 15 years in the military. While in the military he deployed three times, once each to Afghanistan, Iraq and Kosovo. He also completed the U.S. Army’s Ranger School, Command and General Staff College, and various other career courses. He specialized in training and operations where he managed complex training and leadership development programs. He continues to serve with the Ohio Army National Guard.


His primary expertise is leadership and teaches various leadership and teamwork courses at the graduate and undergraduate level. He is actively pursuing ways to improve leadership development through experiential activities with a focus on the use of simulations.

BUSMHR 7234 - Developing Leaders and Coaches Through Practical Exercises
The course starts with basic leadership and coaching principles and ends with complex practical exercises challenging students to become better leaders. The course progresses, allowing the student to build upon the lessons learned through the course. The program incorporates planning, preparation, practical exercises, case studies, coaching and assessment to train and develop future leaders.
BUSMHR 3200 - Managing Individuals in Organizations: Organizational Behavior and Human Resources
Principles for managing the performance of individuals and groups in organizations; introduction to organizational behavior theory and its application to staffing, training, compensation, and appraisal. Prereq: Econ 2001.01 (200) and 2002.01 (201), or equivalent. Not open to students with credit for 3100 (400) or 701. Not open to students enrolled in UUSS, UExp or PreBSBA-PR.
BUSMHR 3211 - Leadership and Character
Issues of leadership as related to value-based decision making, character, and personal integrity.
BUSMHR 4235 - Developing Leaders through Practical Exercises
This course is taught in a layered effect starting with basic leadership principles and ends with complex practical exercises challenging students to become better leaders. The leader development program incorporates leadership principles, practical exercises, case studies, and assessment to train and develop future leaders. Prereq: English 1110.01 or equiv.
BUSMHR 7270 - Leadership and Organizations
This course covers the role of leadership in management and the use of power and influence to motivate individuals and effect organizational change. It provides students with the opportunity to develop personalized leadership development plans based on current literature, case study, and behavioral assessments. Prereq: Enrollment in SMB-Analytics program, or permission of instructor.
BUSMHR 4235H - Developing Leaders through Practical Exercises
This course is designed to create experiences and help students from those opportunities. DLPE is a highly interactive course focused on practice and hands-on activities. Leadership is a hands-on activity and so is this class. This will lead to self-discovery and help students establish their personal leadership style. Prereq: Honors standing.
BUSMHR 7306 - Leadership & Interpersonal Dynamics
This will be a highly interactive course with several simulations and action-based learning exercises throughout the semester. Students will learn about leadership characteristics and the environment in which some characteristics thrive while others falter. The student will learn about their own leadership style including gaps they may have and how to bridge those gaps. Prereq: Enrollment in MHRM program.
BUSMHR 4998 - Undergraduate Research in Management and Human Resources
Undergraduate Research in Management and Human Resources for non-honors students. Prereq: BusAdm 2291 (499), and Jr standing, and permission of instructor. Repeatable to a maximum of 12 cr hrs or 4 completions. This course is progress graded.
BUSOBA 7266 - MBOE Leading Operations
The explicit link between problem solving and lean activities such as policy management, standardized work, visual management, human resources management and "go see" (gemba) activities are explained. Prereq: Enrollment in MBOE. Not open to students with credit for 844.
BUSMHR 3100 - Foundations of Management and Human Resources
The study of human behavior in organizational settings. Prereq: Math 1130 and Econ 2001.01. Not open to students enrolled in the Fisher College of Business.
BUSMHR 4244 - Negotiations
This course will explore the major concepts and theories of negotiation and the dynamics of interpersonal and inter-group negotiation and problem-solving strategies. Prereq: English 1110.01 or equiv. Not open to students with credit for 4220.
MBA 6202 - Leadership
An overview of factors that influence individual and team performance and techniques to improve it; analytical frameworks for determining effectiveness of given techniques in specific circumstances. Prereq: Enrollment in MBA or WPMBA program; or permission of instructor. Not open to students with credit for 860.
